Hermione's Happy Halloween

Lina very much enjoyed trick-or-treating in her new Hermione Granger costume! (Hermione is a popular character from the Harry Potter book/film series.)

It was so amusing when a Harry Potter series fan told Lina "Hi, I'm Ravenclaw, I don't know if I should give someone from Gryffindor candy. Hmmmm." Then, she was deemed trustworthy and received a treat  :-)

She was so excited to finally wear the costume for Halloween...click here to see when she wore the costume for the first time at home.

Ghouls & Gourds at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

We went to the Halloween festivities at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, for the first time. They call the annual event Ghouls & Gourds. It was so much fun. Lina dressed up as a nature fairy. She played games like rutabaga skee-ball and brussels sprout bowling (with carrots). Also, she participated in the woodland waltz dance with Victorian creatures. There were stilt walkers, giant puppets and a costume parade to join.

We ate delicious meals, with natural ingredients from local farms. The young naturalist was quite taken by the beautiful flowers, plants and trees...and learned so much.  Lina specifically wanted to see the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden (being a huge fan of Japanese culture) and that area was so peaceful and lovely...but we made our way around the whole BBG (it's 52 acres)...and enjoyed all the outdoor areas, including the willow tree, the fragrance garden (where you touch and smell the plants), the lily pool, the rock garden, the hands-on learning Discovery Garden...plus we visited the indoor conservatories (such as the bonsai museum, another nod to our love of Japanese culture, the desert pavilion, the tropical pavilion and the warm temperate pavilion).

Bronx Zoo Nature Adventure

We had the best field trip to the Bronx Zoo this week.

Lina was so excited to ride the Wild Asia Monorail for the first time (we saw an elephant named Happy, a rhino, a tiger, deer, wild horses etc.):

Lina had a blast at the Nature Trek (which opened this summer)...giving us the perspective of a giraffe, in terms of height. She loved exploring the cool tree house, wobbly bridges, walkways, tunnel etc.

Lina is very interested in observing animals and learning about them in person (not just from books or movies). As members of the Wildlife Conservation Society, we appreciate the unlimited admission to the zoos and aquarium...especially since we live in New York City and we would not otherwise have the opportunity to see so many animals that one could see in the wild. Lina loved visiting the Congo Gorilla Forest (we saw the lovely and unusual okapi for the first time). At other exhibits, we saw majestic lions and elegant giraffes outdoors in natural habitats.

We fed & pet the goats at the Children's Zoo...woo-hoo...Lina loves goats SO much!!!

She was VERY interested in the World of Birds exhibit, since she is so fascinated by birds...as well as seeing the beautiful butterflies in the Butterfly Garden.

And Lina+mama took a fun ride on the bug carousel...
