Art in Boxes

I was planning to show photos of beautiful "botanical" art, using materials found on Governors Island, but we couldn't locate CMA's outpost yesterday in time (our family was busy with other activities on the island)...sadly, the Children's Museum of the Arts workshops ended at 3pm.

Instead, I will show you what LC made in her art class last semester at Brooklyn Design Lab. She loves dinosaurs and nature, it was the perfect combo for this sculpture assignment using a toy dinosaur + real moss, twigs, rocks etc. Creating a habitat for the dinosaur inside a box.

Mother's Day Gift from LC

When we came back home on Mother's Day last week, LC took a little spiral notebook out (from a party goody bag she received the day prior) and drew a bunch of adorable pictures for me...and said "Happy Mother's Day!" Here are some photos of the drawings:

Do you want to see close-ups of some of the pictures?

Family Flora Walk

LC was very engaged at the Family Flora Walk. It's the 5th annual NYC Wildflower Week. We walked through the woods of Prospect Park with a Naturalist and discovered (using sight, touch and smell) wildflowers (including flowers, trees, shrubs and grasses), leaves, weeds, mushrooms, seeds, insects etc. The guide held a magnifying glass for us to closely inspect our surroundings. She gave LC a clipboard, pencil crayon and paper to draw what she observed and LC loved drawing the shapes of flowers and leaves. I should have brought LC's camera along. LC told me afterwards she wants to learn gardening! Last year we went to Baby Bugs at Union Square, which was also awesome.

keyboard template art

A few weeks ago I had this idea...let's take the plastic film off my new keyboard (most people would just throw it out) and place it on a piece of paper...

Do you want to see the art that was created with this template?

Magic, Music and Colonial Farm Life

LC and I had a blast at the Old Stone House (a 1699 Dutch farmhouse), getting a taste of colonial life. Not only did we check out the revamped J.J. Byrne Playground, but we attended a fun Mad Hatter's Tea Party. A yummy brunch and super fun entertainment. Liam the Magician made LC laugh a ton during his act (LC is such a fan of all things magic!) and Princess Katie & Racer Steve inspired this butterfly to dance up a storm. Here are some photos:

Submarine periscope, octopus legs...and funhouse mirror delight tots:

Chicken and egg...a creative farm version of tic-tac-toe:

A slide that encourages kids to climb up:

LC loves maps. We're digging the colors and the colonial and farm theme of this playground.

Touch the trees, touch the sky...makes for a very content butterfly.

So much more including a mill stream (runnel) and old fashioned pump...spray cannons...they get an A+ for integrating revolutionary life and farm history with modern play equipment. NYC is our classroom!

Man, Tree and Sunshine - For Doc

LC loves her pediatrician. In fact, she is sad that wellness visits are only once a year. She made this drawing for her doctor and then wrote her first name on top.

Reindeer in the springtime in NYC

So much walking around lately in Brooklyn...different neighborhoods.

So, we finally hit Chelsea in Manhattan. This makes 7 different carousels that LC enjoyed in NYC in the last year. Before the humidity and crowds of summer, we are exploring the best of our city.

When we arrived at Pier 62...LC said "I want ride on reindeer!" (it's just a deer, on a carousel with a variety of animals, but let her hold onto the magic of Christmas all year).
